It's really
too bad that we even have a page related to identity theft on this
Web site. But identity theft is a growing problem and I have seen
it arise after running credit reports during consultations. Be smart
and conscientious in the way that you manage your personal business
and you should be alright. However, if you are careless with your
personal information you could be the next victim of identity theft.
The following
are good tips and safety precautions to take when conducting personal
business and resources to turn to when your good name has been used
in unlawful ways. This general information is NOT intended to
offer legal advice. If need be, consult an attorney for professional
services.
Keep
Your Personal Information Secure
Consumer organizations
recommend that you do the following:
*
Don't carry your Social Security card or other items that have
it written down in your wallet.
*
Protect your bank and credit card account numbers and any PINs that
are associated with them.
*
Don't use internet based home loan and finance companies. It's an
unnecessary risk to have your personal information stored on internet
company Web servers where unlawful access can be attained. (We
never store your personal files on a Web server. We conduct
business in a responsible manner. Click
here to see our privacy policy.)
*
Be sure to tear up or shred papers with personal information. Tear
up unused credit card offers.
*
Check your bills each month for accuracy and unauthorized charges.
*
Check your credit report at least once a year. Consumers can now
get one free credit report a year from each of the three national
credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and Trans Union. Call 877-322-8228
or log on to www.annualcreditreport.com
to find out how.
